Brother of Queens Doctor Rescued in Haiti

A team of rescue workers in Haiti have freed the brother of 
a Queens doctor from a crushed government building in 
Port-au-Prince four days after the 7.0 earthquake rocked 
the Caribbean country.

The first thing Frantz Gilles did after doctors checked his 
vital signs was call his brother at home in New York.

Delande Auguste said he exploded with relief after 
receiving the phone call at his home in South Ozone Park.

Auguste  told NBCNewYork "my brother picked up the 
phone and said, I finished eating a sandwich. I’m alive. 
You can imagine how it was like.”

“A couple of minutes after he came out, I spoke with him. 
Not confused, not losing consciousness, that I cannot 
explain," the doctor said.

Gilles was working in his office at a government finance 
building when the earthquake hit. He spent four days 
surrounded by metal and concrete before rescue workers 
heard his calls for help.

Gilles wife Carline, who lives in Connecticut, said she 
was "speechless."

A team of Israeli rescuers cheered when they pulled 
Gilles to the surface. "Everybody was crying, everybody 
was screaming," said Carlene, whose first thought was 
to rush to tell Gilles' 19-year-old daughter Anya, 
who also lives in Connecticut.
