Thousands attend Moscow rally to support Israel April 25, 2002 AP MOSCOW - At least 3,000 people rallied Thursday evening outside a Moscow synagogue to show their support for Israel. "I believe that all those who want to put an end to terrorism, not in words but in deeds, should be here today," said Gennady Khazanov, a popular Russian humorist and Jewish community leader. "The terror going on in the Land of Israel is an easily exported thing," Khazanov said. "It is in Israel today, but tomorrow it could easily appear in France, England or any other land of the planet." A delegation of 250 delivered an open letter of support Thursday to Israeli Ambassador Nathan Meron, the Interfax news agency reported. The letter bore 12,000 signatures. Yevgeny Satanovsky, the president of the Russian Jewish Congress, said that support rallies were also to have been held in 12 other Russian cities Thursday. Israel and Russia share close ties, with Russian-speaking former Soviet citizens comprising some 14 percent of Israel's population. Russia's fractured Jewish community, with loyalties divided between two rival chief rabbis, has come together in recent weeks in expressing support for Israel.
