Israel - Educational Sugar Packets

March 26, 2009

Hi Everyone!

Two days ago I had dinner with a friend in a restaurant on Emek Refaim street in Jerusalem. While we were waiting for our meals, my friend told me to look at the sugar packets on the table. I picked two of them up and looked at them. One had a picture of Theodor Herzl on it and the other had a picture of Ze'ev Jabotinsky. The backs had a brief biography of these modern Israeli historical individuals.

Binyamin Ze'ev Herzl 1860 - 1904

Play writer and journalist.
Created political zionism and established the World Zionist Congress.
Brought together the First Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897.
Important books: "The Jewish State" and
"Altneuland" (The Old New Land)

Ze'ev Jabotinsky 1880 - 1940

Author, journalist, brilliant orator
One of the founders of the Zion Mule Corps during World War I.
One of the organizers of self-defense during the 1920 riots.
Founder of the Revisionist Movement and Betar.

After 24 years in Israel, I am still amazed at the nice little surprises that one finds in the least expected places.
