Israel ranks number 3 in heart disease among women (IsraelWire-7/26/00) According to researchers at Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Medical Center, heart disease is the number one killer of women in the Western world. Out of 15 Western countries, Israel has the third-highest rate of heart disease in women. Dr. Mady Moriel, senior physician in Shaare Zedek's Department of Cardiology, and Director of the hospital's Clinic for Prevention of Heart Disease in Women, offers the following tips for women for preventing heart disease: 1. Don't smoke. 2. Check your blood pressure, and get treated if necessary. 3. Watch your diet. Prefer foods that are low fat, low cholesterol. 4. Check your blood lipid profile, and get instructions from your doctor for improving it through diet and drug treatment as necessary. 5. Keep your weight under control. 6. Get sufficient exercise. 7. Check your blood sugar. 8. If you are post-menopausal, consult with your physician on the advisability of hormone replacement therapy.
